Wallmatter - Jenny Davis - 2024
Wallmatter - Jenny Davis
Early days in my arts career I only worked on one piece of artwork at a time. Then I realized, l just had too many ideas and thoughts going on in my head all at once.
One artwork wasn't going to do it for me.
So, I started off by lining up several canvases at once and worked across all of them. I still work in this way today.
Whether it's a painting, sculpture or a textile piece, I like to work in a series. This helps me to fully express and understand my ideas. Well, most times at the beginning I don't understand my ideas and I will keep working across many artworks and mediums, until I get out what I'm trying to say .
Also, working in a series I find one thing leads to another. Every mark, stitch or splash of paint informs my next move.
My latest exhibition coming up in August Wallmatter 2024 is an ongoing series, started in 2016. This will be my third, Wallmatter exhibition, since 2016. It will include large and smaller textured abstract paintings and a series of artist books containing handmade rusted matter, stitched papers, textiles & more, inside found vintage cigar tins.
"Surfaces and objects touched by time tell a story and are a raw reflection of their environment. I want to highlight the significance of a random mark, or the crumbling texture of a wall in an underground space. They are evidence to a previous time in history. My abstractions are investigations into marks and traces left behind in urban and rural environments."
