Landwrap 4 Series

New series of mixed media collages/paintings

by Jenny Davis

Through my art, I explore the relationship between the past and present and I am particularly interested in the idea of using collage as a way to recycle and to repurpose the past.

By incorporating vintage papers and other discarded materials into my work, I am able to give them new life and scan into memories of stories known and those imagined. Many pieces of paper and cloth are from past relatives, friends and streets travelled.

My new series of artworks, Landwrap 4, I’ve taken pieces, of torn, hand painted & stained vintage papers, to create layered and textured compositions that evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing. Each little scrap of old paper just as precious and poignant as the other, telling stories of time and memory through its layered chaos.

I like to let each stain, splashes of paint and ink tell a part of a story veiled beneath the surface.

The subject of these pieces link to aerial views over Australia seen when flying and my relationship with the earth. Its a subconscious rendering of the desolate wilderness, granite ochre landscapes, desert plains , shrubby bush, waterholes and walking tracks. Patterns & marks in the Australian landscape.

Once finished, I have carefully mounted them onto custom made, pre- glued, archival mounting panels.
